Gestapo Chief buried in Jewish cemetery
Gestapo Chief buried in Jewish cemetery: as reported in the German press, a prominent Nazi war criminal, chief of Hitler’s infamous Secret State Police (Gestapo), Heinrich Müller, was buried in a Jewish cemetery in central Berlin in 1945. Müller was involved, down to the smallest details, in the planning and execution of the murder of European Jews.
According to Johannes Tuchel, head of the German Resistance Memorial Center, Müller did not survive the war. Tuchel relied on archival evidence and statements of a gravedigger, who identified Müller and said that he was buried anonymously in August 1945 along with other bodies in a Jewish cemetery in central Berlin. According to historical documents, the Nazi criminal was clearly identified. Tuchel remarked, “Müller’s corpse wore a general’s uniform and in the inner, left chest pocket were, among other things, his photo identity document.”
Documents from the German Federal Intelligence Service (BND) show that Western intelligence agencies long believed that Müller had survived the war. In the summer of 1949 Western intelligence agencies believed that Müller was hiding in the town of Karlovy Vary in, what was then, Czechoslovakia. Der Spiegel magazine also reported that even in the sixties there was speculation that Müller was still alive . “The intelligence agencies were completely wrong,” says Tuchel.
The Gestapo chief, supervisor of the Holocaust organizer, Adolf Eichmann of the Reich Security Main Office, on the night of 2 May 1945, in light of the impending German defeat, told confidants that he wanted to take his own life. “It’s no wonder”, says Tuchel, “There is not a single Nazi crime that Müller was not involved in.”
Dieter Graumann , president of the Central Council of Jews , told the press, “The fact that one of the most brutal Nazi sadists is said to be buried in a Jewish cemetery, is a tasteless atrocity that crudely violates the memory of the victims.”
How a prominent Nazi ended up being buried in a Jewish cemetery is still unclear.
